Our vision

Questions

Answered honestly.

What is ECOP?

ECOP is the umbrella initiative that brings together two dedicated divisions: ECOPU, serving police officers, and ECOSU, serving private security officers. Our aim is a strong, independent and non-political worker advocacy structure for fair remuneration, better working conditions, professional integrity and the protection of workers' legitimate interests.

What is the difference between ECOPU and ECOSU?

ECOPU focuses on police officers' welfare, adequate remuneration, police system reform, professional integrity and improved working conditions. ECOSU focuses on private security officers' employment contracts, remuneration, benefits, workplace rights and legitimate employment interests. The two sectors have different employment conditions and legal frameworks, so each division addresses its own.

Is ECOP already a registered trade union?

Not yet. ECOP is in its establishment phase: we are building the membership base and the organisational structures needed to pursue the appropriate registration and recognition. Applying for, or holding, membership does not by itself mean that ECOPU or ECOSU is a registered trade union. The requirements and thresholds will be confirmed and communicated openly.

How do I join, and what does it cost?

Choose your division on this website and complete the membership application. Membership is voluntary and costs R95 a month, collected by debit order once your membership is activated. The application process explains the membership terms, payment arrangements, privacy provisions and how to cancel.

Does ECOP have a legal team?

Yes. Our service model includes a legal team and partnerships with law firms. Depending on the matter, support can include a preliminary assessment, help organising documents and evidence, guidance on grievance and disciplinary procedures, and legal advice and representation through appropriately qualified and authorised practitioners. Membership does not automatically guarantee representation in every matter or cover all legal costs, and no outcome is guaranteed.

Is ECOP affiliated with a political party?

No. ECOP is independent and non-partisan. Our focus is workers' welfare, fair remuneration, workplace protection, professional integrity and constructive institutional reform, and we serve members regardless of their political beliefs or affiliations.

Is my information confidential?

Yes. We handle members' personal information and workplace concerns responsibly and in line with POPIA and our privacy policy. Information is collected for clearly explained purposes and shared — for example with a partner law firm — only where it is authorised and necessary.
